6-30-2008 Myrtle Beach Update #2 The teams hit the field today for the first game action...It was a hot blustery day today with the wind creating interesting experiences fielding pop-ups...also the field turf yeilds some crazy bounces...the entire field except for the mound and home plate area are field turf. 11U Red team split a double-header winning the morning game and losing the afternoon contest. They are 1-1 and have given up 8 runs going into day 3. (Chris -- please add more if you want) 12U Team played the Tinley Park Bulldogs from Illinois this afternoon and cruised to a 10-1 win scoring in every frame. Richard Jackson and Daniel Topping hit long homeruns in the victory. Mitchell Marino started and did not surrender a run through 3 innings and only threw 22 pitches total. Siegel, Topping and Williams all pitched an inning and only allowed 1 unearned run. The dimensions of one of the fields that both teams played on today were 203 in left, 307 in center and 182 in right...it is a replica of the field the Boston Red Sox played on before in the early 1900's...its the site of the first World Series game ever played. Go Buckhead!!
6-29-2008 Myrtle Beach Update Day 1 of the Beach Blast Tournament got off to damp start as rain threatened the opening ceremonies and Skills Competition. Both of our teams came away from the Skills Competition as winners of one of the 3 events. Kyle Murphy slammed the competition by hitting 7 HRs deep into the swamp to take home the prize in the 12U Homerun Derby competition. (and he didn't use a big barrel bat like the competition did) 11U Red team won the 11U Bean Bob throwing competion in their division. Both teams are in action today with the 11U playing a double header and the 12U playing one. 11U -- 10:15 vs River City Rockers from Indiana 11U -- 2:45 vs Carolina Forest Storm from South Carolina 12U -- 2:45 vs Tinley Park Bulldogs from Illinios This week is the largest week ever for the Ripken Experience with 52 teams entered in 3 tournaments (13U, 12U, 11U).

LEATHER AND LUMBER The 8-year old Buckhead Dodgers came out swinging the lumber and flashing the leather Saturday up in Acworth. The Dodgers went up 7-0 against the Bartow Americans in the first inning, let down in the middle innings, and then dug in deep to hold off the Americans and win 15-14. That put the Dodgers at 1-1 in pool play with a must win game Saturday night against the Oregon Park Grizzlies. OP opened up the game scoring 4 runs in the first and Buckhead answered with 4 of their own. The Dodgers then went up by 2 and held on for an inning before relinquishing the lead with some spotty defense. That was the end of that, though! Buckhead was down 11-8 going into the 5th inning when Scott Kirbo decided he needed to sacrifice bunt the runner at 1B over to 2B. (We had no signals for that, but, it worked) With two outs, the runner on 3B scored a big run to make it 11-9.
Kirbo, Drayton Foster, Robert Jordan, Walker Metzger, Ben O’Meara, Ryan Mazur and Max Withrow came up big defensively over the last 3 innings to hold the Grizzlies scoreless. Bottom of the 6th, down 2 runs in a must win situation, Mazur gets everything going with a base hit. Jordan follows with a soft fly to center to get on 1B, moving Mazur to 2B. Jay Sanders goes down swinging on a bad pitch by Coach Jordan. O’Meara hits a hard ball to leftcenter to score Mazur and put Jordan on 2B; 1 down. Foster hits into a fielders choice with O’Meara getting out at 2B. Hunt Sessler delivers a base hit to the right side of the field to score the tying run with both Foster and Sessler moving up to 3B and 2B respectively on a throwing error by the Grizzlies. 2 out, winning run on 3B – every kid’s dream in a must win situation and Brendan Gipson steps up to the plate. Big Brendan scorches a double hopper up the middle, Foster scores, game over. The Buckhead Dodgers win 12-11!
If anyone needs a reason to skip Sunday School and Church on Sunday morning, come on up to Acworth and cheer on the Buckhead Dodgers at 10:30 am Sunday morning as they face Acworth’s home team.

Hello Team Parents! As indicated in your Team Parent folders, Picture Day this year will be held for all teams on Saturday, April 19, with Sunday, April 20 reserved as a rain date. Pictures will be taken in the grassy area behind the new Majors Field. Your team and parent order forms were also enclosed with your team parent information in your folders. Please find the schedule for Picture Day here. Once you've located your team's time slot, PLEASE WRITE THE TIME AND LOCATION (Station A, B, or C) for SATURDAY on each order form, and distribute one order form to each team family. I would recommend giving parents a week to ten days prior notice. Keep the Sunday schedule for your files. In case pictures are rained out, you will need to call team families and tell them of the time slot on Sunday, the 20th. NOTE: SUNDAY IS NOT A MAKE-UP DAY. THE PHOTOGRAPHER WILL NOT BE THERE UNLESS SATURDAY IS A RAIN OUT. All players, managers and coaches, in full cap and uniform and with gloves, should arrive five-ten minutes prior to your scheduled time. Amazingly, Jo Hester keeps things running right on time or even a little early (she's been doing this for a long time!), so please honor the schedule. Every effort has been made to make time slots coincide with game and warm-up schedules, but please let your MANAGERS know about your team's scheduled time well ahead of April 19th to be sure he will be there and will remind players to be there. My apologies to those teams who do not have games on the 19th but have to come to the park anyway. Please email me if you have questions, or call as a last resort!! Many thanks, Martha Payne

Attention coaches and fans. I need your help to update the standings and scores of all games. I will try to update scores every evening (time permitting).
